No more updates to Windows 10 says Microsoft as EOL looms
No more new features...
Windows 10 EOL is coming soon. Legacy drivers a challenge for many. Extended support available.
The current version of Windows 10 is its last, Microsoft has confirmed, with no more new features or significant updates to the dominant operating system before it reaches end of support on October 14, 2025.
Despite Windows 11 hitting general availability on October 5, 2021, Windows 10 continues to have approximately 71% of OS market share. Microsoft has been increasingly aggressive in nudging users to switch.
Jason Leznek, Microsoft’s principal product manager for Windows Servicing and Delivery said that 22H2 edition will be the “final version of Windows 10” – which will receive security updates until Windows 10 EOL in 2025.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT Core LTSC, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2019 Core however all have extended support available until January 9, 2029.
Windows 10 EOL: For many, you still have six years...
Windows 11 sets strict minimum hardware requirements (4GB of memory, 64GB of storage, UEFI secure boot, TPM 2.0, compatible 64-bit processors) and those with large and eclectic IT estates or applications running on Windows 10 with complex dependencies will need to plan carefully for the transition over – or otherwise.
Complications for many IT professionals of major OS transitions include lack of support for legacy drivers and legacy applications including in OT environments and if vendors do not offer Windows 11 support, a heightened focus on security will be critical if Windows 10 is going to continue to be used after 2025.
“If you and/or your organization must remain on Windows 10 for now, please update to Windows 10, version 22H2 to continue receiving monthly security update releases through October 14, 2025. See how you can quickly do this via a servicing enablement package in How to get the Windows 10 2022 Update” Microsoft said.
This applies to all editions of Windows 10 22H2, including Enterprise, Education, Pro Education, IoT Enterprise editions, Home, Pro, and Pro for Workstations and comes eight years after Windows 10’s July 2015 launch.
