Job of the Week: CDIO, Thames Valley Police

As The Stack’s article on digital forensics challenges emphasised, both the opportunity for technology to transform policing and the headwinds – restrictive budgets, organisational sclerosis, change fatigue, technology debt, siloes – against it are significant. For those keen on a genuinely meaningful challenge at the highest level, however, there are few sectors like it. That’s why we’re making a Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) role with Thames Valley Police and Hampshire & Isle of Wight constabulary our latest Job of The Week.

The CDIO role is marketed at £153,000 per year. The successful candidate will be reporting directly to the Chief Constables of Thames Valley Police and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. Applications close January 16. Work is hybrid and flexible. Perks include a healthy 30 days of annual leave plus Bank Holidays. Good news: The last inspection of Thames Valley Police found that it is placing "a greater focus on the wellbeing of the workforce, with a more proactive approach to supporting staff" and has "has introduced some notable innovations".

Thames Valley Police is the largest non-metropolitan force in the UK, covering three counties: Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire and overseeing a diverse population of over 2.34 million people.

It is also the lead force for the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight constabulary meanwhile covers around 1,500 square miles of largely rural areas, but is also responsible for a significant transport network including the M27 and M3, key rail hubs and two international airports, as well as critical national infrastructure sites like the ports in Southampton and Portsmouth and crucial oil refineries. It has been recognised for its forward-thinking approach to technology.

The two say of the CDIO role: “You will drive the vision, leadership and strategic direction in the delivery of digital, data and technology aims for both Forces to enable transformative enterprise-wide improvements in quality, efficiency and organisational effectiveness… We are looking for someone who can develop and implement a digital-first approach to service delivery, working closely with colleagues at all levels of the organisation to ensure our Public, as well as internal Staff and Officers, benefit from the full range of opportunities presented by digital solutions."
